The run will begin at 8 a.m. Ruth Sessions, of Leisure Services, said they have also had walkers in the past, and anyone who would like to walk should begin at 7:30 a.m.
Participants can register at the Leisure Services office through Friday for $10. For those who register the day of the race, the cost is $15. Race day registration will begin at 7:30 a.m.
Bob Tate, Leisure Services director, said the annual 5K has been taking place on National Trails Day since about 2000, when the Coal Creek Trail was built.
National Trails Day is observed on the first Saturday in June, and is designed to create awareness about trails, Tate said.
“American Hiking Society’s signature trail awareness program, National Trails Day, inspires the public and trail enthusiasts nationwide to seek out their favorite trails to discover, learn about, and celebrate trails while participating in educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, instructional workshops and trail work projects,” according to www.americanhiking.org.
Tate said when they were working on the Fiddlers trail, they also had a work day, but they always have the 5K. Additionally, they try to promote trails year-round with the Family Hiking Series, which is also sponsored by Dixie National Forest, the Bureau of Land Management, and Southern Utah University.
The next hike in the series, to Hidden Falls, will also take place Saturday. Those who would like to participate should meet at the Main Street Park pavilion.
There will be prizes for 5K winners, and all participants will have the opportunity to win prizes in a drawing after the race, Sessions said.
