Cassidy Holmes’ future looks bright for her senior year on the Canyon View Falcon’s basketball team. Playing for a club team in Salt Lake has helped her in her preparation.

The Salt Lake Metros basketball team is an elite club team that selects top players in Utah and trains them to play basketball at a higher level. Holmes gets to experience playing with the best of the best from several states.

The club invited Holmes to play during March of her junior year. Canyon View girls’ basketball coach Brad Lambeth said playing for the club team is a “neat experience” for Holmes. It is like being selected for an all-star team, he said.

Holmes enjoys the experience playing with players from all over the state. She said she didn’t know anyone when she first got there but through practices and games she has developed friendships that she hopes to keep as long as possible.

“If Cassidy doesn’t take anything athletic out of this experience she will definitely learn how to make relationships and learn to get along with (others) and support others,” her father, David Holmes, said of her experience.

The Salt Lake Metros team has won two games and lost two in its first tournament. It will play in another tournament in San Diego at the end of July. Holmes said she feels the squad has a good chance of doing well in that tournament and that they have played well together so far.

She said her experience on the team has helped her develop her skills just by the intensity with which the other athletes play. She has developed a new confidence in her game. Her experience with the Salt Lake Metros has also helped her improve her ball handling and overall basketball skills, she said.

“Before Cassidy could rely on her athletic ability to get her by in games,” David Holmes said. “Now that she is playing against these other intense teams she has to step up her game and develop her athletic talent.”

Holmes said her family has been a great support through this whole experience. Her family travels with her to many of the practices and encourages her to play her best.

With all Holmes has learned from this experience, she feels that next year Canyon View has a good chance of defending its region title and going further in the state playoffs. Lambeth said he feels the team also has a good chance.

“There are a lot of talented teams, but we will be competitive and we plan on a good season,” Lambeth said.

With Holmes’ hard work and easy-going personality, there is no doubt that she will be a huge asset to Canyon View’s team next year.

“She’s a quiet leader,” Lambeth said. “She shows her leadership through her actions on the floor.”
