The two-day tournament included eight different age divisions, from 18-and-under to 8-and-under.
Teams were guaranteed a minimum of four games in pool play. The teams with the two best records advanced to the championship game. If teams had identical records, fewest runs allowed was the tie-breaker, followed by results versus common opponents.
RMSB tournament director Dennis Udy was pleased with the results.
“Cedar City has been great to us,” Udy said. “It’s always nice to come down here. We really like the success of the tournament and the turnout we have each year.”
Fields in Parowan, Enoch, and Cedar City sponsored tournament play. Several local teams competed, and three advanced to the championship game.
In the 18u division, the Hillsports Blue Sox advanced to the championship game by going 3-1 through pool play. Despite losing their first game on Friday to the Snow Canyon Warriors, they rebounded and won the nightcap 4-2 against the Las Vegas Wildcards.
On the second day they went 2-0, dropping Cedar Baseball 8-2 and the Silver State Sluggers (Nevada) 6-1. Both Hillsports and Snow Canyon ended pool play with 3-1 records, but per RMSB tie-breaker rules, Hillsports advanced. They allowed just 10 runs in pool play, while Snow Canyon allowed 11.
In the final, the Blue Sox played a tough game against a Las Vegas Panthers team that was a perfect 4-0 in pool play. The game was tied twice before Las Vegas took a 6-5 lead that they never relinquished. The win gave them a sterling 5-0 record for the tournament, while Hillsports finished at 3-2.
The Canyon View Falcons and Cedar Baseball were other notable local teams in this age division. Both teams finished the tournament with 1-3 records.
In the 15u division, Cedar Baseball won a close 7-5 game against the Las Vegas Panthers in their first match-up of the tournament. They finished the first day out strong by downing the Payson Lions 5-0.
On Saturday they started off sluggish offensively and dropped a 5-1 decision to the Las Vegas Aces. In the second game, the found their groove offensively and used stellar pitching to take a 8-1 victory over the Las Vegas Wildcards.
Cedar advanced to the championship thanks to the RMSB runs allowed tie-breaker, earning them a rematch with the Aces. Cedar played well offensively, plating six runs, but sub par pitching and defense led to an 8-6 victory for Las Vegas. Canyon View was the other local team competing in the age division.
In the 13u division, the Cedar Blitz marched through their bracket with a 4-0 record, which included a last inning come-from-behind victory over the Dixie Indians. In their second game, the Blitz dismantled the Kearns Crush 13-0.
On Saturday, they continued to play well. They destroyed the Las Vegas Wildcards 20-2, and then hung on for a close win against the Utah Dingers. The victory over the Dingers was a first for Cedar.
“That was exciting for us,” said Blitz coach Jim Jensen. “It’s the first win we’ve ever had over them. Our kids really played well and we did a great job on both sides to hang on.”
The Dixie Indians also defeated the Wildcards, which set up a rematch with the Blitz for the championship.
Dixie jumped ahead 3-1 in the first inning, and 6-3 after the second. Cedar was able to tie the score at 6 in the bottom of the third.
Both teams’ offenses stalled until the sixth inning. The Indians scored twice and the Blitz scored once, bringing the score to 8-7.
In the seventh inning, Dixie rallied offensively, adding five more runs, before shutting Cedar down, for a final score of 13-7.
“It’s a tough loss,” Jensen said. “Both teams played well, but they made more plays at the end. I’m really proud of our kids. They had a great tournament.”
