With just two returning varsity players in Michaela Fuller and Ryleigh Coleman, coach Karen Marchant believes this fall will be a building year for the team.
“We are just hopping right into it,” Marchant said. “We got beat pretty good by Hurricane, and I hope the experience of match play will help out our girls.”
Canyon View, with a slew of new girls, has been practicing hard during the summer to learn the rules of tennis and to work on their technique.
Marchant said she feels that the main goal for the team is focusing on technique, their ground serves, and learning the rules of the game.
“We are going to struggle this year, but we are going to get some girls a chance to play, and hope that they will do the best they can,” Marchant said.
For the more experienced players, Fuller and Coleman, goals are much higher. Both qualified for state a year ago and are playing in the top two spots.
“I feel like they will do quite well,” Marchant said. “The rest of the varsity team just played junior varsity last year but they are gaining experience and I expect good things from them as well.”
Marchant said their hard work and dedication in the summer has paid off and she has already seen improvement in their playing. Not only does the team look promising, but she feels they have developed great bonds and friendships this year.
“They are all good friends,” Marchant said. “They cheer each other on and off the courts.”
