To the Editor,

On Oct. 14, my husband attended the Cedar City Council meeting and was concerned about an item that was discussed. We wrote a letter and presented it to the council on Oct. 21. Here is what we wrote:

Mayor Sherratt and members of the council,

A vote was taken last November to fund and build a pool complex and Proposition 1 was passed by a large majority. As we recall, the bond passed by about 65 percent. At that time you sold the community on a PVC clad, stainless steel pool system, like the Myrtha pools recently completed in Washington, Utah and Kanab, Utah.

Now we have members of the council who want to change the deal and switch to the old style concrete pools of lesser quality, both short term and long term. We also understand from recent council meetings that the council intends to pursue cheaper imitations of the Myrtha pools, which aren’t even approved by the Health Department. How could this be?

You are holding up the construction process – costing the community valuable time and money – by questioning past decisions that have already been made and approved by both the council and the community.

Have you not already made commitments and promises to the contractors as well as the community? When the city floats a bond, they have made commitments and those commitments need to be fulfilled.

In order for the facility to be a success for the community, we need you to do the things that were agreed to and fulfill the representations that were made to the city in regards to the type and quality of pools included with this new facility. We need you to step back on this issue and let the process move forward.

We want the high-quality facility complete with the pools like we were pitched and promised last year. We did not come to the polls last November with overwhelming support for this bond only to have a change that reduces the quality of the pool we voted for.

We want the council to move ahead with this project and stop delaying the process so that the community can use and enjoy this facility as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Ron and Liz Riddle

We would like to encourage the members of our community who share our opinion to speak out. There are council members who are not supportive of keeping the Myrtha pool. The city council members need to hear from you, and if they think there should be a change made they should explain to you why.

The city council members are Dale Brinkerhoff, Nina Barnes, Jolene Goff, Georgia Beth Thompson and Steve Wood.

Liz Riddle, Cedar City
