According to the website www.suu.edu/hss/english/kcr, KCR is a peer reviewed literary journal featuring the work of Southern Utah University students, faculty and alumni.
“Its purpose is to emphasize student learning in the production and dissemination of the journal to provide a forum for writers and artists associated with SUU to publish their work and to have their work read by their peers and to serve as undergraduate research, in that, it assists students in editing and designing a magazine as well as providing a collaborative effort between supervisors, mentors and students,” the website reported.
Wynne Summers, faculty advisor, said the revival of the publication was largely because of the encouragement of Kay Cook, who was English department chair at the time.
“I took on the revival of the Kolob,” Summers said. “We started with an English staff of six people that first year of production. Now there are 20 on staff between English and graphic design students.”
Summers said she isn’t sure what the old KCR looks like since she hasn’t seen a back issue but to the best of her knowledge it was made within the department and stapled together. Today the book is professionally bound and published.
“Now it has become much larger with templates from graphic design and submissions in art, poetry, prose, photography, all of which are sent to Paragon Press in Salt Lake City,” Summers said.
She said the financial support of the SUU Outdoor Initiative has played a pivotal role in the production of the magazine after the inclusion of last year’s art project “Zion: A Creative Response.”
“This year we will showcase the visuals and poetry from the SUU Parowan Gap project called, ‘Parowan Gap: God’s Own House,’” Summers said.
Amanda Utzman, KCR editor, said the publication is now taking submissions for the 2010 issue and will continue to accept work from a diverse media pool until Nov. 30.
“We accept up to 3,500 words of prose and up to five poems,” Utzman said. “The graphic design side accepts artwork from a lot of different media – traditional paintings and drawings, digital artwork, photography, and even things that can’t be put into a book, like sculpture.”
“A high-quality photo can be taken of the work to be printed in the magazine,” she added.
Anyone who is an SUU student, faculty member or alumni is welcome to submit his or her work online at www.suu.edu/hss/english/kcr.
Summers said for the first time the publication will be offering a subscription to those interested. With the purchase of a subscription one would receive a previous issue of the book as well as the upcoming issue for 2010 when it comes out.
