GPA coat, can drive successful

Gateway Preparatory Academy had a huge response to its Coat and Can Drive. Thanks so much to all those who donated! Our Student Council delivered the items to Iron County Care and Share on Friday.

We are celebrating Family Traditions week school-wide as we head into the holidays, with activities and presentations on customs and traditions. Some of our fourth to sixth grade classes are studying the solar system, with Mrs. Diaz’s class even recreating it on the soccer field, to scale.

We are all looking forward to our Seasonal Concert Friday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. It will showcase the orchestra, band, guitar, choir and drama classes. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.

For parents who wish to contribute to our school during the Holiday Season, all classrooms are in need of glue sticks, tissues, and copy paper.

Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Enoch organizes service project

The teachers at Enoch Elementary have begun a service project and we could use some help. We have created “Santa’s Shoe Shelf.” We are looking for very gently used and brand new shoes for our students in need. We want each of our students to have warm, comfortable shoes to wear.

If you have shoes ranging from sizes fitting tiny kindergartners to larger fifth graders, please send them to school with any student. You may also drop them off at our school office, or give them to a teacher.

This is a project that will benefit our students throughout the school year. We would appreciate help from community members, businesses, and concerned citizens.

We look forward to reporting on the success of this service project in weeks to come.

Parents: please remember to send your students to school no earlier than 8:30 a.m. Please send students to school with a warm coat now that the weather is so frigid.

North misses crossing guard

We would like to send our love and best wishes to our School Crossing Guard, Dan Venables. Mr. Venables is a Cedar City icon because of his friendly smile and wave at all who drive past North Elementary on 200 North.

He was injured in a traffic accident a couple weeks ago and won’t be at his post for a while. We want him to know that we miss him and are hoping for his full recovery.

We need him back as soon as possible because he helps make North a safe and friendly place. Get well soon Mr. Venables.

We are fortunate to enjoy our proximity and partnership with SUU. Recently, several classes have visited the Braithwaite Fine Art Gallery and the Utah Shakespearean Festival on field trips. Our students are learning to appreciate the arts and are eager to express themselves in those areas.

South thankful for generosity

Thanksgiving may be over, but we’re not through giving thanks at South. We are thankful for Acclamation from SUU. Last week they brought a fabulous performance to our student body to kick off the holiday season.

We are also thankful for the generosity of our incredible student body.  We’ve amassed bushels of hygiene products for our service project in Mexico. Thank you for your support in that project. What a timely lesson in generosity and giving!

On Friday, Dec. 11 our orchestra and choir will be sharing their talent with a holiday concert for the school. Visions of sugarplums are dancing in our heads!

The PTA will be meeting on Dec. 17 at 3:45; a donation of your time would be much appreciated!

Three Peaks has math winners

Three Peaks Elementary recently hosted the district Sharp Minds Math Challenge. All nine of the district elementary schools were represented. There were 27 participants.

Adam Covington from Three Peaks collected a championship medal winning first place overall. He is a fourth grade student in Mr. Shaun Hunt’s class. From Mr. Clayton Carter’s class, Caitlin Gunter placed fourth, and Sierra Padilla placed seventh.

The staff at Three Peaks congratulates these students. It is amazing to have three students in the top seven from our school.

This week, guests Paul and Chien Ling will be working with second graders in Arts Fusion. Rick Parker from Rocky Mountain Power will be visiting with fifth graders studying electricity and electrical safety.

Principal Tim Taylor represented the Utah Elementary Principals at the State Level Title 1 Practitioners Committee meeting in Salt Lake City. Three Peaks was again named a Top Performing Title 1 school for the second consecutive year.

Congratulations to Emily Pruitt, school counselor, on the birth of her new 6 pound, 8 ounce baby boy.

CVMS food drive tops 1,000 items

The CVMS GYC carried out a successful food drive just before Thanksgiving. They gathered over 1,000 cans and other non-perishable items for the Care and Share. We thank all those who were generous shared their abundance with those who don’t have enough at this time of year.

Congratulations to the winners of the Lion’s Club Peace Poster Contest: First place, Kassidy Wray; Second place, Shauntel Shelley; Third place, Jayme Mills; Fourth Place Dylan Nelson; Fifth place, Summer Smith; Honorable Mention – Travis Bettridge, Ryane Caldwell, Christina Capps, Jula DeMille, Connor Dunn, Riley Griffiths, Jace Lowe, Scott Ranger and Ayumi Scott.

Thanks to the members of the Lion’s Club for helping with the presentation ceremony and for sponsoring this worthy cause.

Thanks to Brenda Olson and our food service ladies for the delicious Thanksgiving dinner served on Nov. 19. Our special ladies prepare for weeks to assure our school enjoys a wonderful feast. We appreciate all their efforts.

CMS musicians to perform

The Cedar Middle School Orchestras will be performing in the CMS gym at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 17.

The CMS Art Guild enjoyed a trip to Emerald Point on Dec. 1 to decorate the tree and visit with the residents.

CMS Warriors for the month of October have been chosen. They are Josh Dickison (6th), Alexia Loveland (7th), and Leah Stacey (8th). Congratulations! The Varsity Band marched alongside the Cedar High and Parowan High School Marching Bands at the Storybook Cavalcade on Saturday. It was a thrill to be part of such a large and powerful marching band.

We have some big concerts coming up. Beginning 6th grade performed Wednesday night, as did combined Concert Band and Advanced. The combined JV Band and Percussion Ensemble will perform tonight at 5:30 with Varsity and Warrior Jazz at 7:30. Come and enjoy!

Education: The gift that keeps giving

Iron County Adult Education and Family Literacy realize that Christmas and New Years are the perfect times to get a fresh start – especially with education, which is so often the gateway to jobs, independence and personal success.

That’s why we’re inviting community members to give an unusual gift to a loved one this year – that of Adult Education. As part of our New Year’s Resolution Enrollment drive, which runs through Feb. 20, gift cards are available that will enable a friend or family member to complete high school, learn English as a Second Language, or prepare to pass the GED.

For $40, one can help a potential student overcome one of the biggest obstacles to continuing their education – the cost of the enrollment fee. And, for those who bring in this article, the student’s first quarter program fees will be waived – and both them and the student will be entered in a drawing for one of several great prizes.

Enrollment is always open for new students who would like to join, although we’ll be closed between Dec. 21 and Jan. 4. Our programs run every Monday – Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. To learn more, call 586-2870.

To get a non-refundable gift certificate, bring cash or check to:

Iron County Adult Education and Family Literacy, 510 W. 800 South, Room 3 (In the SWATC building behind C-A-L Ranch), Cedar City, Utah 84720.
