High schools name Sterling Scholars

IRON COUNTY – Iron County School District’s three high schools have announced their Sterling Scholars for the 2009-2010 school year.

Forty-three students from Canyon View High School Cedar High School and Parowan High School have been chosen to represent their schools as Sterling Scholars in up to 15 categories: Agriculture Science Business and Marketing Computer Technology Dance English Family and Consumer Science Science Social Science Speech/Drama Music Trade and Technical Education Visual Art Mathematics Foreign Language and General Studies.

The Sterling Scholar Awards is a program unique to Utah sponsored by the Deseret Morning News and KSL Television. According to the Sterling Scholar Awards website the purpose of the program is “to publicly recognize and encourage the pursuit of excellence in scholarship leadership and citizenship of high school seniors in the state of Utah.”

Each of the Sterling Scholars in Iron County’s three high schools were required to fill out a nomination form that was turned in to their respective departments Cedar High School Sterling Scholar Advisor Michelle Taylor said. Each department then found outside judges to determine the winner. Students are judged on scholarship leadership and citizenship according to the Sterling Scholar website.

The Southwest Region Sterling Scholars will be determined on April 8 at a final program at Dixie State College.

Iron County’s Sterling Scholars have been working on their portfolios which will be judged at the final program. The Sterling Scholars will also participate in interviews with the judges that same afternoon Taylor said. Judges will give the students a score from 0-100 with 50 points available for Scholarship 25 points for Leadership and 25 points for Citizenship.
