The competition will feature bands from Iron, Washington, Kane, Beaver and Garfield counties who have auditioned or been selected locally to represent their schools at the Battle of the Bands.
The bands must be comprised of at least two people and at least 75 percent of the members must attend the school they are representing. The band members can be no older than 20 and no younger than 9th grade, CVHS PTA President Tammy Banks said.
Banks said there will probably be about 10 to 12 or more bands participating this year.
Each of the bands will be given eight minutes to perform two songs. The first song must be an original composition by the band. The second song must be a well-known song from the 60s through 2005.
The bands are required to submit a typed copy of their lyrics, to insure that they are compliant with PTA’s “family-friendly” standards and the Iron County School District’s Language Standards.
“It needs to be decent, polite and honorable,” Banks said.
“This is a great opportunity for students to get involved and participate in something wholesome,” Banks said. “It’s a way for them to express their talents and represent their schools as well.”
The competition on Tuesday will send one winning band to compete against other region winners at the Utah PTA 8th Annual Battle of the Bands on March 20 in Salt Lake City.
Last year’s winner of the multi-region competition, Fillmore Odd Generation from Tuacahn High School, went on to take second place at the state Battle of the Bands.
“I am of the opinion that most of the students who will be performing in Battle of the Bands are some of our Southern Region high schools’ top musicians,” Banks said. “These students have taken their musical abilities a step higher as they have initiated the formation of their own bands. This takes much determination, hard work, and tremendous effort. This alone says much about the musicians that will be featured at BOB. This evening should be one of great entertainment!”
Admission to the Battle of the Bands will be $5 or $3 for those with a PTA membership card or a student I.D. Concessions will be sold outside the auditorium as well. All proceeds from the Battle of the Bands will support the PTA.
