On Feb. 9, the Falcons were unable to maintain a lead earned by Cassie Holmes and Kassidy Carter, who netted 9 points each. The end of the third quarter saw the Falcons up by 4, but an inspired quarter from Dixie’s Sarah Empey in which she scored 8 points, and a run of good foul shots put the Lady Fliers ahead at the ending buzzer 34-32.
The Falcons performed well below normal at the foul line, garnering only 33 percent. Both teams scored 12 field goals giving free throws added value. Mix that with a defense that allowed Dixie to make 10 of 26 foul shots and a clear picture of their defeat becomes evident.
On Thursday, the lessons learned from their loss seemed well and truly learned as Canyon View dominated Hurricane’s tough defense with a final score of 62-47.
“We knew they were going to press us and so we worked on that,” said coach Brad Lambeth. “They pushed us hard, but we were able to put it in the basket and that’s what made the difference.”
Danielle Wynn, Cassie Holmes and Tori McGrath all scored into the double digits despite Hurricane’s defense, which stole the ball nine times, often without allowing Canyon View onto its own side of the court.
Hurricane’s aggressiveness caught up with them as Canyon View made 24 of 32 foul shots (75 percent to Tuesday’s 33 percent) giving them the victory.
In the final quarter, a foul by Holmes caused her to fall odd and injure her knee, which put her out of the game.
“She’s in good spirits,” Lambeth said. “Hopefully it’s just bruising and nothing too serious.”
With good rankings and high scoring players, the Lady Falcons face their regional battles this week.
“The girls are playing well,” Lambeth said. “They’re having fun and that’s the big key. We’re not going to do anything to mess that up.”
