Kyle Petersen, visiting assistant professor of photography at SUU, has been in Cedar City for the past two years and said although there is a lot of local support for the arts here the work that is shown all seems to be the same type of traditional artwork without a lot of diversion from that framework.
“The idea is to show off non-traditional and avante-garde artwork that doesn’t fit into the general framework of the Cedar City gallery system,” Petersen said. “Our goal is to show the entire breadth of what is being created in the region.”
Petersen said the idea is the brainchild of one of his students, Cooper Fossat, a junior at the university studying photography.
“I believe that Cedar has a history of supporting the arts; from the Shakespeare festival to Groovefest our community has a way of supporting one another,” Fossat said. “I want to see more art, untamed and raw. I want to see what Cedar has to offer the artistic community as a whole.”
“The Rogue Art Gallery is a venue for community members and students to show off what kind of art they love to make, the art they make when they get to choose, where it goes and when it gets made,” she added.
Because of the nomadic style of the gallery each exhibit will be different from the last, Petersen said. The first exhibit will be at Cedar Storage, thanks to its generous donation of space, and will be a one-night-only event.
Submissions are accepted from the community and are eagerly anticipated, Fossat said. More information and details about how to submit work can be found at www.ironroguegallery.blogspot.com. The deadline is Tuesday.
