The Canyon View baseball team saw two victories last week as they faced off against Delta on March 17 and Union on Saturday in a couple of games that have shown what kind of team we can expect to see from them this year.

On the offensive side, Canyon View is showing a mix between their hitters and their speed runners. Lex Nielson hit a home run and managed 3 RBIs on Wednesday’s game against Delta. “Lex has a surprising power to him,” coach Jason Jacobsen said. Jason Holmes got a double while Kameron King got a pair of doubles with Zane Affleck nabbing two triples against Union.

“We’re a very good situational hitting team,” Jacobsen said. “But we need to do better.”

Zack Hanson didn’t provide a big hitting power, but his speed made up for it as he stole five bases against Delta.

“Coach says a single and a stolen base is as good as a double,” Hanson said. “I get on base and let the other guys hit me in. I do my job and they do theirs.”

Pitcher Jason Holmes did a stellar job against Delta, earning strikeouts and preventing any scoring from the Rabbits. Combined with the offensive power of Hanson’s stolen bases and Nielson’s hits, as well as a slew of first base errors committed by the Rabbits, the Falcons trounced Delta 10-0.

On Saturday, Union pulled an early lead, scoring four runs in the first inning to Canyon View’s two, but the Falcons pulled out an additional eight points while allowing only one from Union in the third, managing a final score of 10-5.

This week the Falcons faced in town rivals Cedar High on Tuesday (results were unavailable at press time and will be reported next week) as well participate at the Snow Canyon Tournament on Friday and Saturday facing off against Las Vegas, Judge Memorial, and Olympus.

Judge Memorial has lost two of its three games so far this season while Olympus has won three of four. Cedar’s team may be a tough fight for the Falcons as they’ve had more games this season so far with more victories.
