After the first game loss to Wasatch in the playoffs, Canyon View found itself where no team likes to be: the consolation bracket. Six wins later it found itself where every team dreams of being: the state championship game.

They started last Thursday against Region 11’s No. 4 team Morgan. Zack Hanson hit a double for one RBI scoring the only run in the game with pitcher Kameron King earning a no-hit victory with a final score of 1-0. This victory led to the Falcons playing Region 12’s fourth place team Delta. Canyon View scored two in the third and one in the fourth, fifth, and sixth giving it five runs off only three hits.

Jake Dedrick pitched the game, giving up a single run in the sixth with six hits. The Rabbits went down and the Falcons moved on to play the next day.

On Friday they first faced Richfield, which lost to Juan Diego to get to the consolation bracket. The Falcons had three runs after the second inning to Richfield’s one, but a third inning double from Jordan Williams gave Richfield the tie. After two run-less innings, Caden Hansen got a RBI in the seventh to break the tie and give the Falcons their fourth consecutive win in the consolation bracket.

This is when people started to notice them.

They then faced Region 11’s No. 2 team Bear River, which pulled itself through the consolation round in a story similar to Canyon View’s: A loss to Emery in the first round and a string of four victories after.

Bear River survived longer than most do in a state competition’s consolation bracket, but they couldn’t stand up to Canyon View. Weston Pearson pitched the game for the Falcons, giving up nine hits, but backed up by an awesome defense, that translated to only three runs. Meanwhile, Canyon view scored five in the fifth on their way to a 10-3 victory, surviving to the next round and building their streak to five.

Next came the game against in-region rival, No. 1-rated Desert Hills, which lost to Juan Diego in the semi-finals and was looking for its way back into the championship.

Though the Thunder had a better record than Canyon View, they were unable to find a victory the two times the teams faced each other this season, and this game didn’t change that. Holmes once again took to the mound and managed four run-less innings. The Falcons scored big in the second and fourth, garnering four runs in each to get the 9-5 score that led to their victory.

This game proved troubling outside the realm of baseball as Desert Hills’ assistant coach Chuck Stuart suffered a burst appendix. leading to a 20 minute delay of the game in the sixth inning.

The victory against Desert Hills gave Canyon View its first-ever shot at the state championship game against Juan Diego.

The Falcons gained an early lead from a sacrifice fly RBI by Zane Affleck, but that was all Juan Diego pitcher A.J. Begay would allow. Though they managed eight hits, Canyon View couldn’t convert any of them into another run while Juan Diego managed one run in the third and four in the fourth off nine hits.

A second place finish marks the most successful ending to a season Canyon View baseball has ever had. Though they had a 6-6 region record, they ended up as the most successful team in Region 9.
