Cedar City Fire Chief Paul Irons said the call came from Pretzer’s husband, Richard Pretzer, and a neighbor. Richard Pretzer returned home to find the fire and was unable to enter the house.
The Cedar City Fire Department responded to the home, at 1236 N. 6700 West, with two engines and about 12 firefighters. The blaze was nearly out when they arrived because of the work of Richard Pretzer and a neighbor, Irons said. The fire was contained to the master bedroom area.
Richard Pretzer was transported to Valley View Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation. He was released the same day, Irons said.
The state fire marshal investigated and a written report with the fire’s cause was not completed at press time. Irons said it may be completed next week.
Iron County Sheriff Mark Gower was unavailable for comment at press time regarding Hazel Pretzer’s cause of death or whether an autopsy would be performed.
