The Utah Summer Games was allocated $30,000, the Iron County Care and Share was awarded $5,000, the Cedar Rodeo Committee received $4,500, and the Cedar City Lions Club was awarded $4,000.
The Southern Utah Mobile Crisis Team got $3,000, while $2,500 was awarded to both Iron County Search and Rescue and Cedar City SkyFest. The council gave $1,000 to the 4-H Horse Club and $500 to the Iron County Extension.
The council debated whether to fund lighting for another field at the Fields at the Hills (Field 1 was already planned to be lit) or to fund amenities like pavilions and a “seat wall” as part of the project.
Though several people expressed a desire for more lit fields, Councilor Nina Barnes said they have added lights to four fields this year and she feels the amenities are more important and the lights can be added later.
“I think taking out any of the amenities for lights is ripping off the project,” she said.
She added that she thought the Little League groups could maybe do some fundraising to help with the lights.
The council voted to keep the seat wall that was in the architect’s design, and build one large pavilion and one small pavilion. Excess money would be set aside for lights until the rest of the funding for the lights was available, Barnes said in her motion.
The seat wall will be a concrete wall that will help with a grade change, add to the aesthetic of the fields, and provide a seating area.
After the council meeting there was a Redevelopment Agency work meeting and an update to the Hyatt Palma Study was approved. The extensive study was conducted in 1996 and the current streetscape and some of the signage on Downtown Main Street are a result of that study, said Rep. Evan Vickers, owner of Bulloch Drug. It was designed to be a five-year plan though, and after 14 years an update is needed.
