Last season, the Parowan volleyball team started its season with a 3-1 loss against the Grantsville Cowboys. This year things are looking better as the Lady Rams managed a victory against Grantsville in the fifth game garnering a 3-2 victory.

The Lady Rams pushed hard in the opening games, racking up two wins thanks in large part to Rickie Warr and Chennin Benson, who worked hard on the net as they managed eight kills each for the entire match.

Warr shined in the first game, serving as well and placing at least two points on Parowan’s scoreboard every time she served the ball. Though some wild balls kept the score close, Parowan beat the first game 25-22.

The second game saw Brittan Labrum sneaking several well placed shots to find points as well as executing digs to several of Grantville’s attacks. This second game saw the Lady Rams get into a 18-21 deficit, but found their groove for a 25-22 victory.

The next two games were decidedly un-cool for the Lady Rams as mis-hits and shanks ruled their day. Though Stephanie Harwood tried to save the game in the last few minutes with a couple of serves that pushed their score to 22 while Grantsville was 24, a wild shot gave the Cowboys that game.

The fourth game saw the Lady Rams even more frantic. In all the games of the day Parowan would find themselves with a slight deficit, then rally together to get ahead. In this game, they never managed to pull together. Though individual actions were impressive, they never gelled as a team and they suffered a 17-25 defeat.

This was coach KarriAnn Raddon’s first game as coach of the Lady Rams and she saw the problem not as lack of skill, but as a lack of teamwork.

“It was just that we needed to focus on the whole team,” Raddon said. “It’s ‘one for all and all for one,’ that was our cheer and that’s what we needed to have in mind to win the game.”

The fifth game saw the Lady Rams playing calm and collected while their score tallied up. Shalei Harwood proved her worth as the sophomore used careful and controlled spikes to help bring the 15-9 victory of the game and thus the 3-2 overall win.

While the victory over Grantsville is telling of the direction the team is taking, Raddon said there are still things to work on.

“We have some technical things we have to work out,” Raddon said. “We’ll hopefully push past this and get it done in three games next time.”
