CEDAR CITY – The Orchestra of Southern Utah’s 14th annual Fall Recital Series features the talents of Southern Utah musicians as well as a few world-famous performers and begins Tuesday.

With performances from local favorites Master Singers, In Jubilo, and Color Country Winds (among others) and special presentations like New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music and Classical Music Discoveries Live Internet Radio Recital (just to name a few), this year’s recital series will be one to remember, and one you won’t want to miss.

The series opens with New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. This special presentation, coordinated by LaKay Weber and Teri Kenney, is in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition at the Iron County Visitor Center hosted by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

The performance is narrated by Classical Music Discoveries announcer Sandy Hedgecock. Dibon Rhythm Troupe, Fred Dunnell, Ukulele Ladies, the Becky Moore Trio, LaKay Weber, Steve Downs and his band, Marlo Ihler, and Sally Jensen present musical selections that celebrate America’s rich musical heritage.

Pieces include “African Drum Rhythms,” “Danny Boy,” “Amazing Grace,” “Music, Music, Music,” “Hukilau Song,” “Aloha Oe,” “Long, Long Trail,” “Good Night Ladies,” “Down to the River to Pray,” “Elite Syncopations (ragtime),” “Utah Trails” and “The Red Hills of Utah.”

Last season’s Live Internet Radio show was so popular that OSU is bringing it back again on Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. This recital is performed like an old-time live radio show broadcast to the entire world via the internet – complete with audience participation.

World famous concert pianist, composer, and arranger Matt Herskowitz of Montreal, Canada plays Theme from “Jerusalem Trilogy” by Herskowitz, Schumann’s “Toccata, Op. 7” (with improvisation) and Chopin’s “Etude in C Major, Op. 10, No. 1” (in boogie-woogie with improv).

World famous composer, author, humanitarian, artist Carol Worthey performs her own composition “The River” and several of her own poems. Local favorite The Master Singers sings “Lida Rose” and “After Dark.” The singers with retro souls – Gina Ginouves, Holly Barrick and Julie Leigh, sing “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” Advanced violinist Marisa Barth performs Bruch’s “1st Violin Concerto.” The Festival City Chamber Singers also perform.

Lady composers are featured on Sept. 21 at 7:30 p.m. This recital spotlights female composers, with the exception of a Mendelssohn “Trio.” Performances will be given by pianist Mary Anne Andersen, the Amor Trio (comprised of pianist Tracey Bradshaw, violinist Sara Penny, and cellist Brooke MacNaughten), and In Jubilo under the direction of Jackie Jackson with Teresa Redd accompanying.

Movie composer Lydia Ashton has arranged “Starlit Night” for trio for this recital. Jason Bonham has selected viola pieces by Amy Beach.

The Sept. 28 recital features a special presentation by the Cedar City Quintet with pianist Hal Campbell. The quintet is comprised of violinist LuAnne Brown, Colleen Dowse and Caroleen Lee, violist June Thorley and cellist Carol Ann Nyman. They perform “Hymnotics” by Hal Campbell and “Concerto in DM, Opus 21 for Violin, String Quartet and Piano” by French composer Ernest Chausson.

OSU closes their 2010 Fall Recital Series with an evening of Musical Fireworks on Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The performance pieces provide a lot of musical flash and dash and include a Quintet by Borodin, Allegro Appassionato by Camille Saint-Saens and Chaconne from Partita No. 2 in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Musicians include Color Country Winds under the direction of Ken Hedgecock, Steven Downs, the Southern Utah String Quartet with Teri Kenney, Sam Tremea, Tammy Tremea and Heather Burton. “Ohana Kualoa” with Steve Downs, Lance Bassett and Ben Fuller set the scene for the fireworks with music from Hawaii.

The 2010 Fall Recital Series provides a variety of music that will delight audiences of a variety of musical interests. Recitals are held at St. Jude’s Episcopal Church, 70 N. 200 East, in Cedar City. A suggested donation of $5 for adults and $3 for students (ages six and older) is appreciated.

Children over the age of 6 are welcome at all the concerts. OSU requests that babies and children younger than 6 not attend as recitals are recorded and podcast by Classical Music Discoveries.
